O'Malley communications strategist launching own firm

Steve Kearney, a longtime aide to Gov. Martin O'Malley, is leaving his position as the state's director of communications to start his own public affairs firm.
One of O'Malley's key strategists for more than a decade, Kearney will launch Kearney O'Doherty Public Affairs LLC, which will be located in downtown Baltimore. The firm will assist companies with public relations and government affairs assistance.
"It's something I've thought about for a long time," said Kearney in a phone interview Thursday of starting his own firm. The move will enable him to blend his private sector and public sector experiences, said Kearney, whose last day at the State House is Jan. 15.
Kearney, 42, is partnering with Damian O'Doherty, a former aide to Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith, on the venture.
Prior to working for the state, Kearney was director of policy and communications for O'Malley while he was mayor. Prior to that, Kearney was director of public relations for Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson & Hand, a Washington, D.C., law firm.
